2007-08 Speaker/Workshop Series

There is no cost for UMBIDA Members and their families for the Speaker Series. Non UMBIDA Members pay $10.00 per family. For the Fall Workshop, UMBIDA Members pay $25.00 and Non UMBIDA Members pay $50.00. Certificate of attendance will be offered for CEU credits. If there are changes in the program schedule, registered persons will be notified.


Description of Speaker/Workshop Series

Speaker Series - Thursday, September 27th, 2007, Groves Academy, 7:30 PM

Student panel will be sharing thoughts and reflections “Many Voices” about growing up with learning disabilities/dyslexia, moderated by Winnelle Carpenter. The panel will share their challenges and success as they navigate through academic learning with a hidden disability. Parents and guardians are invited to bring their students and encourage them to interact with the panel and ask questions of the students after a short presentation.

Understanding & Developing 504 Educational Plans When Your Child Does Not Qualify for Special Education

There are other ways to support your struggling student and participants will learn about 504 Educational Plans. This is a 2 part Series. The actual creation of 504 Educational Plans and IEP accommodations will be January 15th, 2008. If you can not attend both sessions, please try to attend one of them.

Saturday Workshop, January 12th, 2008, 9 AM-12 PM

Getting the Most Out of Written Expression and Using Five, Effective Spelling Strategies

Participants will learn to create an individualized spelling and remedial spelling program based upon the needs of their students, and participants will also learn how to create an individualized program to enhance written expression for their students without watering the curriculum and lowering academic expectations.
